About Dr. Hiller A. Spires:
Educator for
over 40 years
I started painting at the age of 40. As a longtime observer of contemporary art, I attended a local art class on a whim, and a wonderful teacher supported me so that even this first experience was a success. Inspired and full of anticipation that I could learn to express myself through the medium of paint, I began drawing and painting still lifes. I was drawn, however, to non-representational forms and quickly became interested in how color, texture, and shape creates mood, thought, and more importantly—emotion.
For me, art is an exploration of emotion. I use color to explore feelings of joy, sadness, peacefulness, anger, exhilaration. I am particularly drawn to juxtaposing blue and orange, representing energy and serenity. I use shape and texture to contribute richness and depth to the work. Often, I work along a continuum from geometric to organic without seeing dichotomy. Paul Valery claims "A poem is never finished—only abandoned." Likewise, I find it difficult to say a painting is completed. The unfinished look reminds me there is always more to be done, whether painting a canvas or conducting my professional work as an educator. By and large, I paint for myself. If, however, others can enjoy and appreciate what I create, I am even more pleased.
